On Thursday, the Sindh High Court upheld a verdict on the appeal of four accused in the kidnapping and murder case of journalist Daniel Pearl, who worked for the US Journal Wall Street Journal, after 18 years. Was ordered to end seven years in prison.
"Although it is a provincial matter in the context of criminal cases, the federal government has raised the issue with the Sindh government, expressing concern over the decision," the Interior Ministry statement said.
The Interior Ministry statement said that "an appeal against the recent decision of Aaliyah Sindh in the Daniel Pearl case will be filed in the Supreme Court next week, in which case the Sindh government has been asked to utilize the best resources."
The accused's lawyers, Roy Bashir and Khawaja Naveed Ahmed took the stand before the trial court saying that all the witnesses in the case were police officers and the prosecution had failed to prove the crime against the accused. "There is no eyewitness to the incident," the lawyer further said.
The court issued a verdict in favor of the accused, ruling the death sentence against Omar Saeed Sheikh seven years imprisonment while the other three accused against whom the sentence of life imprisonment was ordered to be honored. issued.
It is also worth mentioning here that the main accused, Omar Sheikh, has been in prison for 18 years and has already completed seven years of imprisonment. All the accused in the murder case have been booked under the Public Prosecution Act (MPO) and detained for three months until their appeal is filed.
The federal government has asked the Sindh government to fulfill all the requirements of justice and also consult the Attorney General of Pakistan on the matter. The Interior Ministry clarified its stand on the matter, saying that "the government of Pakistan is committed to the logical end of terrorists and to fulfill all legal procedures."
